Research into our Cenotaph names has found many eligible people to be missing from the Memorial inscriptions
Anyone from our Borough, not previously named on the Cenotaph, who served and paid the ultimate sacrifice, are now included on a new Roll of Honour board (please see the Parameters for inclusion, at the bottom of the page)
The board was unveiled on Sunday 11/11/2018 by special guest Gulf War Veteran Darren Walker. For full details of all missing named here, please scroll down the page. A printed copy is available to view in the local history section of Pudsey library.

New Memorial Plinth - the full dedication:
Pudsey & Farsley Royal British Legion Branch (in partnership with Pudsey & District Civic Society) have researched the complete set of Pudsey Cenotaph names from the First World War - the aim being to properly identify each person. During this project they identified many eligible people that were missing from the original Memorial Inscription List. The names on our Cenotaph have never been a complete group representing all of the people from the district who were lost during The First World War. Their names were provided by families wishing to remember their loved ones on a fine and fitting monument – but sadly this was not fully inclusive of everyone deserving recognition. There were many reasons for names being omitted; some of these were the cost of the monument subscriptions, families moving away and doubts about eligibility. This Roll of Honour now recognises those who were previously missing from the original Memorial Inscriptions. Each individual is important, and no sacrifice should be forgotten. The tremendous efforts and sacrifices that our entire community gave for our freedom cannot be overlooked.
This is our Thank You to that generation of incredible people

Missing Names Memorial Update 2021
Three years on after the unveiling of the Missing Names memorial at Pudsey Cenotaph, there are still new local casualties of WW1 being discovered.
We may never know the true cost that the Town paid during the 'War to end all Wars', however nobody will go unacknowledged - we will remember them.
The following fallen have been discovered, researched and found to fit the qualifying criteria for inclusion on the memorial during 2019/20:
Private 18/1136 Joseph Nagle who fell on 1st July 1916.
Son of James and Rosebella, born in Stanningley in 1886. His father James hailed from Glenroe in Limerick and was a Railway (Passenger) Guard, his mother Rosebelle hailed from Sussex.
Joseph had originally volunteered in 1915 with the 2nd Bradford Pals, but had been transferred to the 10th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment.
Joseph's former colleagues in the Pals faced a terrible first day in the Battle of the Somme. However Joseph with the 10th West Yorks was to find himself involved in the worst disaster any unit suffered, as his entire battalion was virtually wiped out assaulting the village of Fricourt. Originally buried in a makeshift grave he was re-interred in Dantzig Alley Cemetery, just along the road from Fricourt towards Montauban.
Lt Harold Reginald Wright
Born at Pudsey 15th February 1894. Mentioned in DeRuvignys, attached 2/5th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of Edwin Henry and Emma Wright, husband of Rosebelle Nagle, brother in law of Joseph Nagle, long time resident of Saltaire.
Died of wounds 16th September 1918, Buried at Terlincthun British Cemetery, IV. A. 49 France. Memorial: Titus Salt Grammar School WW1 (WMR 28772), Baildon.
Private Joe Musgrave
15/667, of "B" Company Leeds Pals who fell on 1st July 1916.
Son of Mrs Sarah Musgrave, Joe was born in Pudsey and lived on Crimbles Road with his parents before moving later to Bramley. Volunteered during September 1914.

Drummer/Cyclist John Wilkinson
Underage soldier and musician, born on 11th March 1899 at Pudsey. Before joining the Army Cyclist Corps, John Wilkinson had lived with his parents William Waterhouse Wilkinson and Ann Wilkinson at 4 Halliday Street, Pudsey. His girlfriend Hilda Margaret Smith lived at 3a Crimbles Terrace, Pudsey, with her parents John George Smith and Ann Smith. John may have joined up under age in 1916, and the sweethearts were in regular contact during his service between 1916 to 1919. Having survived the War in France, most likely due to his musicianship and poor eyesight restricting front line duty, John tragically died of heart disease aged only 21. Hilda, devastated was never to marry, passing away at Richmond House, Farsley on 24 May 1981 aged 82. Both are now buried in Pudsey Cemetery.
Lieutenant Ernest Holden
U.S. Army, Croix de Guerre, Purple Heart, resident of New York.
Regiment: 369th Infantry Regiment, 93rd Division 'Harlem Hellfighters'
Died on September 30th 1918 aged 24. Buried at: Plot H Row 42 Grave 31 Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery Romagne, France.
Born in 1896 in Lowtown, Pudsey; all we know about Ernest is from two short paragraphs in the Pudsey & Stanningley News taken from telegrams received by Miss Galloway of Crawshaw Street.
Ernest's father John William Holden lived in Rheims for many years. His mother Sarah Elizabeth was the only child of David Emsley, grocer of Lowtown. Ernest's brother Thomas (born in France) was wounded 3 times in service with the RAMC.
Ernest emigrated to New York at some point after 1911, his arrival and life in the States is something we are keen to trace. It is also likely that Ernest had strong French language skills which is probably why he found himself promoted to Lieutenant in an American Army unit serving under French command...
The 369th Infantry Regiment, commonly referred to as the Harlem Hellfighters, was an infantry regiment of the New York Army National Guard during World War I and World War II. The Regiment consisted mainly of African Americans, With the 370th Infantry Regiment, it was known for being one of the first African American regiments to serve with the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I.
The regiment was nicknamed the Black Rattlers. The nickname Men of Bronze (French: Hommes de Bronze) was given to the regiment by the French and Hell-fighters (German: Höllenkämpfer) was given to them by the Germans. During WWI, the 369th spent 191 days in frontline trenches, more than any other American unit. They also suffered the most losses of any American regiment with 1,500 casualties.
On 25 September 1918, the French 4th Army went on the offensive in conjunction with the American drive in the Meuse–Argonne. The 369th (attached to the French) turned in a good account in heavy fighting, though they sustained severe losses. The unit captured the important village of Séchault. At one point the 369th advanced faster than French troops on their right and left flanks, and risked being cut off. By the time the regiment pulled back for reorganisation, it had advanced 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) through severe German resistance.
Private Albert Wilcock
Royal Army Medical Corps 99th Sanitary Sect.
Albert Wilcock died aged 33 of smallpox on Jan 4th 1919 at Basra Mesopotamia. Born the Bramley side of Stanningley and baptised at Stanningley St Pauls. Beloved son of Isaiah and Jane brother of Herbert and Walter, Walter goes AWOL from the army for 2 weeks after he finds out about Alberts death. In 1891 Albert was living on Laurel Terrace off Richardshaw Lane, by 1901 had moved to Summerfield Place and worked as a grocers assistant, and in 1911 was at 34 Wensleydale Rd Thornbury working as a House Decorator. Albert is buried at Basra War Cemetery, Iraq and is remembered on the family grave in Pudsey Cemetery.

THE MISSING NAMES FROM THE FORMER BOROUGH OF PUDSEY
The main factor that accounts for many of the names listed below is the change of emphasis of the Stanningley War Memorial.
The old Stanningley Ward had parts of its district divided between Pudsey, Farsley and Bramley making civic planning complex. It also had the largest population of any of the six Pudsey Borough Council Wards (3058 in 1911).
Even during the First World War there was a lot of civic discussion about building permanent memorials. Pudsey and Farsley both completed their memorials in the early 1920s. Bramley and Stanningley though faced complaints that stand alone war memorials were not an appropriate use of scarce public funds.
The plan for a public Stanningley memorial was finally shelved in 1922, the monies raised being diverted into the Stanningley War Memorial Institute. Some of the names that would have appeared on their memorial found their way onto both Pudsey and Farsley memorials after the cancellation was announced, infact 16 year old Private Harry Wharton is now named on Pudsey, Farsley and Bramley memorials.
Bramley was to eventually gain the memorial it deserved in 2014, many of the lost Stanningley names now feature on its new plaques unveiled on
November 11th 2016.
These names plus others from local memorials, burials in Pudsey Cemetery, and lengthy research form the basis of the new missing names memorial at Pudsey Cenotaph.

Missing names from the many Memorials of the District
For example there are two names that deserved inclusion on Pudsey Cenotaph, but are remembered instead at Pudsey St. Lawrence & St. Paul Church; Lance Corporal Cecil Maurice Thrippleton (Sep 19, 1917) & Private Robert Wade (Sep 12, 1914). Robert Wade died in mysterious circumstances in 1914 having just joined up, Cecil Maurice Thrippleton had connections to Fartown Sunday School but may have moved away from Pudsey before the start of the War.
Private Walter Stanley Ramsden, 22, son of John Ramdsen the owner of Brick Mills in Pudsey is another high profile name missing from the Cenotaph. He was badly wounded in the leg near Euston Dump whilst serving with the Leeds Pals in the lead up to the Battle of the Somme. Suffering a fractured right fibula, Walter was invalided back to England. He was later discharged from service after the leg injury left him with permanent disability, sadly he died during the Spanish flu outbreak in 1919. He is only remembered on the Pudsey Conservative Club memorial board and the family grave in Pudsey Cemetery where he is buried.
The lost memorial of Sunfield Wesleyan Methodist Chapel at Stanningley, removed during the 1960s building of a new housing estate.
Many of the names to follow on the coming list are sourced from these memorials including St. Thomas Stanningley, Pudsey’s numerous Methodists Chapels, Fulneck Moravian Community and St.Joseph’s Baptismal Font.
